SECTION 535: CRACK SEALING USING LOW-VISCOSITY, GRAVITY-FED SEALERS

535.1 Description

This Work consists of crack sea ling using low-viscosity, gravit y-fed sealers.

535.2 Materials

535.2.1 High Molecular Weight Methacrylate

The Contractor shall provide low viscosity, non-fuming HMWM res in selected from the Department’s Approved Products List and in accordance with Table 535.2.1:1, “HMWM Property Requirements.” Table 535.2.1:1 HMWM Property Requirements Property Test Requirements Resin Specifications: Viscosity, centipoisesa — 8–25 Specific gravity — 1.00–1.07 Flash point, °F, minimum Pinsky-Martens CC 180 Tensile elongation, %, minimum ASTM D 638 5 Performance Properties of Resin: Cure speed: — — Surface cure, hours, maximum @ 73 °F @ application temperature — Gel time, minutes, @ application temperature, 50 ml sample — 20–90 aBrookfield Model LVT Viscometer, Spindle I at 60 rpm.

535.2.2 Low Viscosity, Low Surface Tension Polymer

535.2.3 Fine Aggregate

The Contractor shall provide fine aggregate for spreading over treated areas that is free from dirt, clay, asphalt, and other Deleterious Materials, and has moisture content of less than 0.2% when applied. Unless otherwise approved by the State Mate rials Bureau, the Contractor shall provide sand in accordance with Table 535.2.3:1, “Fine Ag gregate Gradation Requirements.” Table 535.2.3:1 Fine Aggregate Gradation Requirements Sieve size % passing Minimum Maximum No. 8 95 100 No. 16 30 70 No. 30 0 3 No. 100 0 1

535.3 Construction Requirements

535.3.1 General

The Contractor shall seal individual cracks to refusal. Where closely spaced map cracking has occurred on concrete Bridge decks, the Contractor shall seal by flooding the entire surface to refusal. T he Project Manager will direct whi ch method to use.

535.3.1 1 Planning and Demonstration

At least 21 Days before applying the sealer, the Contractor sha ll submit a written crack- sealing plan to the Project Manag er that includes the following : 1. Material descriptions; 2. Deck preparation and application methods; 3. Safety considerations for blasting and sealing personnel; an d 4. Plans to protect other per sons, vehicles, and property from injury or damage.

535.3.1 2 Sequence of Operations

The Contractor shall seal cracks on new concrete Bridge decks o r approach slabs after 28 Days of curing or per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

535.3.2 Surface Preparation

The manufacturer’s application requirements shall govern. If t he manufacturer does not provide guidance on the following items, the following shall ap ply: 1. The Contractor shall clean concrete surfaces from three (3) inches to five (5) inches on either side of individual cracks; 2. The Contractor shall remove asphalt Material, oil, dirt, rub ber, curing compounds, Section 535: Crack Sealing Using Low-Viscosity, Gravity-Fed Sea lers Page 461 paint, and other Deleterious Mat erials by grinding, sandblastin g, and/or shot blasting; 3. The Contractor shall air blast, with oil free compressed air , or vacuum all loose Material from visible cracks; 4. The concrete shall be dry at the time of overlay application . The criteria for “dry” shall be established by: a. ASTM D 4263: for every 500 square feet, an 18 inch x 18 inc h plastic sheet shall be taped to the deck with two (2) inch duct tape. The te st area shall be protected from direct sunlight, direct heat, and damage to the plastic. After 16 hours, the concrete shall be considered dry when no moisture ap pears on the bottom of the plastic; and b. It is also Acceptable to use a moisture meter in conformance with ASTM F2659; i. Unless otherwise directed by the manufacturer, the reading s hall be four percent (4%) or less; ii. The meter shall be an electrical impedance moisture meter s pecifically developed and calibrated for the non-destructive measurement of the comparative moisture condition in concrete floor slabs; and iii. The moisture meter shall be used and calibrated in accorda nce with the manufacturer’s written recommendations. The moisture meter manufacturer’s recommendations and the calibration data shall b e provided to the Project Manager for Acceptance prior to use on the Proje ct; and 5. The Contractor shall prepare the concrete surface per the ma nufacturer’s recommendations. In the absence of the manufacturer’s recommen dations, the Contractor shall prepare the concrete surface to produce a surf ace relief equal to the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) Surface Prep aration CSP 5-8, or ASTM E 965 pavement macrotexture depth from 0.04 inch to 0.10 i nch. The Contractor shall provide ICRI concrete surface profile chips to the Project Manager for inspection of prepared surface. ICRI concrete surface prof ile chips will become the property of the Department.

535.3.3 Storage of Sealer

The Contractor shall store the sealer or its components separat ely and within the manufacturer recommended temperature ranges.

535.3.4 Application of Sealer

Surface temperature shall comply with the minimum manufacturer’ s recommendations. The Contractor shall follow the manufacturer’s mixing and appli cation recommendations. The Contractor shall apply one (1) gal per 200 ft for crack sealing and one (1) gal per 100 ft 2 for surface sealing. The Department may require two (2) or more ap plications of sealer for cracks 1/32 inch or larger. The Department may require application of a t emporary surface sealer to wider, full depth deck cracks on the deck underside. Prior to use on the Project, the Contractor shall ensure that t he curing period recommended by the manufacturer confirms proper curing of the M aterial.

535.3.4 1 Excess Sealer

The Contractor shall sweep away sealer that does not fill crack s, is not absorbed by the concrete surface, and fills or partially fills the grooves of a tined or grooved surface. Section 535: Crack Sealing Using Low-Viscosity, Gravity-Fed Sea lers Page 462

535.3.5 Application

The Contractor shall apply dry fine aggregate with coverage of eight (8) lb per square yard. The Contractor shall place sand before the sealer starts to gel. The Contractor shall remove excess sand after the curing period.

535.3.6 Limitation of Operations

The Contractor shall prevent the sealer from leaking through cr acks onto persons, traffic, and property. If deck preparation procedures or the sealer def ace the appearance of Bridge components other than the crack sealed areas, the Contractor sh all repair those components at no additional cost to the Department. 535.4 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT Crack sealing will be measured by the linear foot. Concrete s urface treatment will be measured by the square yard.

535.5 Basis of Payment

535.5.1 Work Included In Payment
