609.02 Integral Curb, Combined Curb and Gutter, Bituminous Curb and Concrete Curb

C.DEADMAN Each Include the cost of excavation and backfill for placing the deadman to be included in the contract unit price for Deadman . Unless otherwise specified, the Department will consider the cost of excavation for placing steel jacks to be included in the contract unit price for Steel Jack and Steel Cable . INTEGRAL CURB, COMBINED CURB AND GUTTER, BITUMINOUS CURB AND CONCR ETE CURB

609.01 Description

This work consists of constructing integral curb, combined curb and gutter, bituminous curb, and concrete curb.

609.02 Mater Ials

Provide Class A concrete for integral curb, combined curb and gutter, or concrete curb in accordance with Section 701, “Portland Cement Concrete.” Provide Type S5 or Type S6 asphalt concrete for bituminous curb in accordance with Subsection 708.04, “Composition of Mixtures,” except provide asphalt concrete with an asphalt content of 1.15 times the asphalt content required by the appropriate job -mix formula. Provide sealant material in acco rdance with the following subsections, or as otherwise approved by the Resident Engineer: Material: Subsection: For Concrete Curb 701.08 For New Concrete Pavement 701.08.F For Most Joint Rehabilitation 701.08.F For Integral Concrete Curb Joints 701.08.D For Combined Curb and Gutter Joints 701.08.D INTEGRAL CURB, COMBINED CURB AND GUTTER, BITUMINOUS CURB AND CONCRETE C URB 609.04 543 609.03 EQUIPMENT Provide a curb machine capable of extruding a uniformly tex tured material to the shape and density and established line and grade required in the Contract.

609.04 Construction Methods

A.Excavation Excavate to the depth shown on the Plans, and compact the base to a firm, even surface. Replace soft or unsuitable m aterial with material approved by the Resident Engineer, and compact.
B.Forms Provide forms made of wood, metal, or other material that will not warp or misalign during placement of curb material. Ensure forms extend the entire depth of curb, or curb and gutter. During the placement of the concrete or asphalt, brace and secure the forms to prevent deflection from the alignment or grade shown on the Plans or directed by the Resident Engineer. Do not allow shimming to the bottom of the forms to exceed 2 in [50 mm] in built -up thickness for special curb sections. Obtain the Resident Engineer’s approval for fastening the built -up section to the form. Clean, and oil or wet forms before placing the concrete. Ensure tight forms to prevent leaks.
C.Placing Con crete Check forms, then place and vibrate concrete in accordance with Subsection 414.04, “Construction Methods.”
D.Surface Finish Uniformly brush the surfaces as soon as the curb concrete can keep its shape without sup port. Edge formed concrete joints, including edges at expansion and contraction joints or weakened -plane joints, to the radius shown on the Plans.
E.Joints Construct curb joints perpendicular to the subgrade and to the longitudinal axis of the curb. Cons truct expansion and contraction joints at locations of joints in the adjacent pavement structure and in accordance with Subsection 701.08, “Joint Fillers and Sealants.” Use pre -molded expansion joint filler of the thick ness and at the locations for expansion joints . For curb and gutter contraction joints used in conjunction with asphalt pavement, saw in accordance with Subsection 609.04.H, “Extruded Method, ” and seal with the same material used for sealing expansion joints.
F.Curb Openings Omit the top portion of the separate curb or the curb portion of the combined curb and gutter for curb openings, indicated or instructed by the Resident Engineer. If leaving the bottom portion of a

544 separate curb, or the gutter of combined curb and gutter, make the concrete higher at the back of the curb line than at the front.

G.Curing Cure portland cement concrete curbs or combined curb and gutter in accordance with Section 414, “Portland Cement Concrete Pavement.”
H.Extruded Method Construct an extruded, combined curb and gutter, using an extrusion machine on a string or wire line, with the rails or forms set at a uniform depth below the finished top of curb grade. Uniformly feed concrete into the machine. Ensure that after extrusion, the concrete maintains the shape of the section without support. Ensure the finished curb, or curb and gutter, is well compacted, with no voids or honeycombs and built to the shape, l ine, and grade shown on the Plans. Perform additional surface finishing immediately after extrusion. Ensure tolerances in accordance with Subsection 414.04.Q, “Tolerances.” Construct joints at the same locations nee ded for form construction. Unless the Resident Engineer approves other methods, saw weakened -plane joints every 20 ft [6 m].
I.Bituminous Curb The Resident Engineer may approve other methods to construct short sections or radii of bituminous curb. Ensur e curb constructed by alternative methods produces the same result as the machine -produced curb. Construct bituminous curb in accordance with Subsection 411.04.A, “Stockpiling Materials,” through Subsection 411.04.G, “Tack Coat, ” except as follows:  Establish one edge of the bituminous curb with a string or wire line.  Place the bituminous curb at the lowest temperature that yields the best results for the mix placed and machine use d.  Ensure the placement temperature does not vary more than 20 °F [11 °C].
J.Backfill Backfill the back side of the curbs with soil approved by the Resident Engineer and compact in layers no greater than 6 in [150 mm] deep. Ensure the curb remains in -place and undamaged while placing and compacting the backfill. Repair damage to the curb at no additional cost to the Department.

609.05 Method of Measuremen T

The Resident Engineer will measure the length of Concrete Curb , Combined Curb and Gutter , and Bituminous Curb along the front face of the curb, including curb openings. 610.01 Description

This work consists of constructing concrete or asphalt sidewalks, driveways, dividing strips, and tactile warning devices.

610.02 Materials

Provide ma terials in accordance with the following subsections: Material: Subsection: Asphalt Mixture 708.04 Portland Cement Concrete Class A 701.01 Tactile Warning Device Material 733.1

610.03 Equipment — Vacant

610.04 Construction Methods

A.Concrete Construction Form, place, and finish concrete in accordance with Subsection 414.04, “Construction Methods," except, broom -finish or burlap -drag the final surface of concrete sidewalks, driveways, and divider strips, or complete as d irected by the Resident Engineer. Connect the old and new pavement with a sawed joint. Use a hand operated or power compactor to compact uniformly the subgrade material. The type and weight of the compactor must meet the Resident Engineer’s approval. Ha nd-tamp areas inaccessible to the compactor.
