466.1 466.3(a)

466.1DESCRIPTION –This work is furnishing and placing a n asphalt paving interlayer system on an

existing pavement surface and before an overlay or construction of pavement layer as a waterproofing or stress relieving membrane interlayer or both.

466.2MATERIAL –

(a)Geotextile Paving Fabric. As listed in Bulletin 15, conforming to AASHTO M 288, Paving Fabrics

Type II . Provide a sta ble fiber, needle- punched, nonwoven material consisting of at least 85% by weight polyolefins, polyesters , or polyamides. The paving fabric must be resistant to chemical attack, rot and mildew , and have no t ears or defects that will adversely alter its physical properties. The fabric must be specifically designed for pavement applications and be heat -set on one side to reduce asphalt material bleed- through and to minimize fabric pick -up by construction equipment during installation.

(b)Fiberglass Mesh Grid. High strength open fiberglass mesh grid secured by either self -adhesive

glue or lightweight carrier fabric . The fiberglass mesh grid must be resistant to chemical attack, rot and mildew , and have no tears or defects that will adversely alter its physical properties. Grid must conform to the following performance properties:

1.Aperture Size, min.: 0.5 inch by 0.5 inch.
2.Tensile Strength, min.: Component strand strength of 560 pounds per inch by 560 pounds per

inch. Test according to ASTM D6637.

3.Elongation: Maximum of 3 percent . Test according to ASTM D6637.
4.Melting Point: Minimum of 420F . Test according to ASTM D276.
5.Mass/Unit Area, min.: 10 ounces per square yard. Test according to ASTM D5261.
(c)Composite Reinforcing Grid. A composite of a high modulus grid and a paving fabric laminated

together . Provide a composite of stable fiber, needle- punched, nonwoven material consisting of polyolefins, polyesters , or polyamides with mechanically reinforced bonded network of reinforced glass filaments. The composite grid must be resistant to chemical attack, rot and mildew and must have no tears or defects that will adversely alter its physical properties.

1.Tensile Strength, min.: Component strand strength of 460 pounds per inch by 460 pounds per inch.

Test according to ASTM D6637.

2.Elongation: Less than 5 percent . Test according to ASTM D6637.
3.Melting Point: Minimum of 320F . Test according to ASTM D276.
4.Mass/Unit Area, min.: 10 ounces per square yard. Test according to ASTM D5261.
(d)Asphalt Material. Performance- Graded Asphalt Binder (PGAB) , conforming to AASHTO M 332, PG

64S-22 as modified in Bulletin 25 as specified in Section 702.

(e)Asphalt Tack Coat. Section 460
