Effective with the December 2018 Letting 127 2019 Standard Spec ifications Section 311 Breaker Run

311.1Description

(1)This section describes providing breaker run used primarily fo r subgrade correction and improvement.

311.2Materials

(1)Furnish stone or concrete processed through a primary crusher set to produce material predominantly

6 inches or less in a t least one dimension, and which is not fu rther screened or crushed. Obtain material from a department-approved source substantially free o f unconsolidated overburden materials, topsoil, organic mate rials, steel, and other deleter ious materials.

(2)A department-approved source is a quarry with acceptable depar tment test results for wear and

soundness on record. The engineer may also approve other sources as follows:

1.Mined or quarried waste rock that, in the engineer's opinio n, is hard, durable, and when processed through

a primary crusher, will produce a material similar in size and texture to that produced from a quarry face.

2.Concrete that the engineer judges substantially free of ste el, building materials or other deleterious

material; and when processed through a primary crusher, produces a material similar in size and texture to that produced from a quarry face.

(3)The department will assess breaker run a cceptability based pri marily on the engineer’s visual

inspection. The engineer may rejec t material produced from dete riorated concrete or from non-durable rock such as sandstone, shale, s late, disintegrated granite, or heavily weathered rock.

(4)The contractor may sub stitute select crushed material conforming to 312.2 for breaker run.

311.3Construction

(1)Place breaker run where the plans show or as the engineer directs. Ensure that there is adequate

moisture in the aggregate during placing, shaping, and compacting to prevent segregation and achieve adequate compaction.

(2)Spread and compact breaker run in compacted layers of 16-inches or less. The engineer may allow

thicker layers to address soft f oundation conditions. Compact b reaker run using standard compaction conforming to 301.3.4.2 .

311.4Measurement

(1)The department will measure the Br eaker Run bid items by the ton or cubic yard acceptably

completed.

311.5Payment

(1)The department will pay for measured quantities at the contrac t unit price under the following bid

(2)Payment for Breaker Run is full compensation for providing bre aker run. If the contractor substitutes

select crushed material for br eaker run as allowed under 311.2, the department will pay for that material at the Breaker Run unit price.

312.1Description

(1)This section describes providi ng select crushed material used primarily for subgrade correction and

improvement.

312.2Materials

(1)Furnish crushed stone or crushed concrete from a department-approved source sub stantially free of

unconsolidated overburden materials, topsoil, organic materials, steel, and other deleterious materials.

(2)A department-approved source is a source with acceptable depar tment test results for wear and

soundness on record. The engineer may also approve other sources as follows:

1.Mined or quarried waste rock that, in the engineer's opinio n, is hard, durable, and when processed through

a primary crusher, will produce a material similar in size and texture to that produced from a quarry face.

2.Crushed concrete that the engi neer judges substantially free of steel, building materials or other

deleterious material; and when p rocessed through a primary crus her produces a material similar in size and texture to that produ ced from a quarry face.

(3)The engineer may reject material produced from deteriorated co ncrete or from non-durable rock such

as sandstone, shale, slate, disintegrated granite, or heavily w eathered rock.

(4)Conform to the following gradation:

SIEVE PERCENT PASSING (by weight) 5-inch 90 - 100 1 1/2-inch 20 - 50 No. 10 0 - 10

(5)Furnish material that has a m inimum of 50 percent, by count, o f the number of particles retained on

the 1 1/2-inch sieve with at least 2 fractured faces.

(6)The department will assess selec t crushed material acceptabili ty based primarily on the engineer's

visual inspection. The departmen t may also test for gradation o r fracture.

312.3Construction

(1)Place select crushed material where the plans show or as the e ngineer directs. Ensure that there is

adequate moisture in the aggre gate during placing, shaping, and compacting to prevent segregation and achieve adequate compaction.

(2)Spread and compact select crushed material in compacted layers of 16-inches or less. The engineer

may allow thicker layers to address soft foundation conditions. Compact select crushed material using standard compaction conforming to 301.3.4.2 .

312.4Measurement

(1)The department will measure the Select Crushed Material bid it ems by the ton or cubic yard

acceptably completed. 312.5 Payment

(1)The department will pay for measured quantities at the contrac t unit price under the following bid
