Wood Stove Clearances & Hearth Requirements — Listing vs NFPA 211

Wood stove clearances confuse people because there’s no single number in the code — the IRC defers to the stove’s listing and label, and the label trumps everything. A modern listed stove might be approved at 8 inches from a wall; an unlisted antique defaults to 36 inches under NFPA 211. Floor protection follows the same logic: the listing controls, with code defaults as the backstop.

Worth knowing

  • Shield construction details matter: the reduction credit requires the shield to be spaced off the wall on noncombustible spacers with open edges top and bottom so air convects behind it — cement board screwed flat to the studs earns far less reduction.
  • EPA-certified stoves (required for new sales) come with detailed installation manuals; inspectors will ask for the manual or label at inspection, so keep it with the stove.
  • Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms per IRC R314/R315 are checked at the same inspection — a wood stove installation is a common trigger for bringing alarms up to current code.
  • Many insurers require proof of permitted installation for solid-fuel appliances; an unpermitted stove is a leading cause of denied fire claims.
