Do you need a permit?
Chandler does not require a permit for a water heater.
Section 29-6.7 amends the work exempt from permit provisions of the adopted residential code by adding exemptions to each work category. Under the gas category, replacement of gas water heating equipment is exempt where the replacement equipment is of equal or lesser BTU capacity and is placed in the same location as the existing equipment; the same terms exempt replacement of gas pool or spa heating equipment and replacement of gas air-conditioning equipment, direct vent equipment, furnaces and log lighters. Under the plumbing category, replacement of electric water heating equipment is exempt where the replacement equipment is of equal or lesser amperage rating and is placed in the same location as the existing equipment, and replacement of water conditioning or treating equipment of equal or lesser treatment capacity in the same location and replacement of solar pool and spa heating equipment of equal or lesser heating capacity in the same location are also exempt. Under the mechanical category, replacement of evaporative coolers of equal or lesser airflow in the same location is exempt. Under the electrical category, repair or replacement of motors, transformers, overcurrent devices or equipment affixed to a Group R-3 occupancy is exempt where the equipment is of the same rating as the existing equipment, is placed in the same location and is labeled as defined in the code. Each of these categories closes with an allowance for special cases as allowed by the Building Official for work of a similar nature and complexity.
