Fence permit checklist — Oakland, California
Assembled from Oakland’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.
Do you need a permit?
Oakland does not require a permit for a fence.
A Building Permit is not required for a wood or metal fence, gate or freestanding wall of 7 feet or less, though fences, gates and freestanding walls made of certain other materials may require a Building Permit depending on their height. Zoning Approval is still required in Residential Zones for a fence, gate or freestanding wall greater than 3.5 feet in height in a front yard.
