Fence permit checklist — Riverside, California

Assembled from Riverside’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Riverside requires a permit for a fence.

When a permit is not required

Fences not over seven feet high do not require a building permit, and approval may be required from the Planning Division for fences located in the front yard setback. The Building & Safety Division's permits page sets that seven-foot threshold; the division's Work Exempt from Building Permits handout exempts property line fences or garden walls not over six feet tall.
