Fence permit checklist — Sacramento, California

Assembled from Sacramento’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Sacramento does not require a permit for a fence.

When a permit is not required

Fences up to seven feet tall are exempt from a building permit, unless the work is within a design review or preservation district or involves a historic landmark. All proposed fencing is subject to Planning Division approval and applicable standards set forth in City Code Chapter 17.620 (Wall, Fence and Gate Regulations). Questions related to fencing requirements can be directed to the Planning Division at Planning@cityofsacramento.org.
