Do you need a permit?
San Diego requires a permit for a re-roof.
Renewal of a roof covering is exempt where the existing roof structure, including the roof diaphragm, is not altered. Replacement of damaged sheathing in kind is exempt on single dwelling units, duplexes and townhouses for up to 25 percent of the entire roof surface area, and new plywood or oriented strand board placed over retained skip sheathing is exempt where the total new roofing weight does not exceed 6 pounds per square foot. A permit is required where structural framing members, roof sheathing, decking, supporting or lateral elements or the foundation are altered, where wood shakes, wood shingles or asphalt shingles are replaced with material weighing more than 6 pounds per square foot, where existing spaced sheathing is removed and new sheathing installed, or where the site contains a designated historical resource or lies in an adopted historic district.
