Shed permit checklist — Aurora, Colorado

Assembled from Aurora’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Aurora requires a permit for a shed.

When a permit is not required

The DIY & Do It Right Home Improvement Handbook states that a shed smaller than 120 square feet in floor area does not need a building permit. Aurora City Code § 22-184 sets conditions on that exemption: the structure must be one story, detached from the residence, no more than 120 square feet in floor area, and not used to store vehicles. A shed that does not meet all of those conditions needs a building permit. The city's zoning regulations on where a shed may be placed on the property apply either way.
