Do you need a permit?
Paterson requires a permit for electrical work.
Ordinary electrical maintenance under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7 requires no permit or notice to the enforcing agency; items include the replacement of receptacles, switches, or lighting fixtures not containing emergency battery packs with like or similar items in other than hazardous locations, with receptacles in locations requiring ground-fault, damp or wet, or tamper-resistant protection complying with the electrical subcode; repairs to installed electrically operated equipment such as doorbells, communication systems, and motor-operated devices; communications wiring in a Class 3 structure that does not penetrate a fire-rated assembly and is not in a hazardous location; replacement of domestic dishwashers; replacement of kitchen range hoods in dwelling units where the replacement hood's exhaust rate does not exceed that of the existing hood or 400 cubic feet per minute and the hood recirculates or vents independently to the outdoors; installation of a burglar alarm, security system, or doorbell in one- and two-family dwellings; and installation of a plug-in landscape irrigation unit under 30 volts at one- or two-family dwellings.
