General building work permit checklist — Cincinnati, Ohio

Assembled from Cincinnati’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Cincinnati requires a permit for general building work.

When a permit is not required

A permit is generally not required at 1-, 2- and 3-family detached dwellings for repair and replacement of windows as long as they are the same size and same type; roof coverings with no more than two layers of roofing material; gutters and downspouts, including valleys, flashings, soffits, fascia and associated trim work; siding replacement; flagpoles; play equipment not greater than 12.5 feet in height and not provided with electric or heating equipment; and storage sheds not greater than 100 square feet in area that are no higher than eight (8) feet in average height and located in a rear yard in accordance with the Cincinnati Zoning Code. If the property or building is designated as historic by the City of Cincinnati, a Certificate of Appropriateness must be applied for and received from the Urban Conservator (513-352-4848) before starting work.
