Shed permit checklist — Salem, Oregon

Assembled from Salem’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Salem requires a permit for a shed.

When a permit is not required

The City's Add an Accessory Building to Your Property page exempts from a building permit a structure used as a tool shed, storage shed, playhouse, or similar use that does not include vehicle storage or residential occupancy, with a floor area of less than 200 square feet and a height of less than 10 feet. The City of Salem Guidelines Regarding Work Exempt from Permit exempt non-habitable one-story detached accessory structures of not more than 200 square feet in floor area with an average roof peak of not more than 15 feet, increased to 400 square feet on a parcel of 2.0 acres or more when the structure is at least 20 feet from all property lines.
