Do you need a permit?
Providence does not require a permit for a fence.
The Department of Inspection and Standards lists fences not over 6 feet high among the residential work for which a building permit is not required. That exemption covers the full height a fence may lawfully reach in a residential setting, because Providence Code of Ordinances § 5-54 prohibits erecting any fence, or other structure in the nature of a fence, exceeding six feet in height in or adjacent to a residential use, and § 5-47 limits any fence other than a wire fence running adjacent to a residential driveway to 36 inches high for the first 20 feet back from the property line.
