Knoxville requires a permit for a deck.
A detached deck may qualify for a building-permit exemption under Section R105.2 when it is 200 square feet or smaller, no higher than 30 inches above grade, freestanding rather than attached to a dwelling, and not serving the dwelling's required exit door. Most projects still require application and review to confirm an exemption, and an exemption does not authorize work that violates the residential code, the zoning code, or other city ordinances.
