Electrical work permit checklist — Knoxville, Tennessee

Assembled from Knoxville’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Knoxville requires a permit for electrical work.

When a permit is not required

Section R105.2 allows permit exemptions for limited electrical work; items include minor repair work, temporary decorative lighting, reinstallation of attachment plug receptacles, in-place replacement of branch-circuit overcurrent devices of the same required capacity, and low-voltage wiring or equipment operating under 25 volts and 50 watts. Most projects still require application and review to confirm an exemption.
