General building work permit checklist — Dallas, Texas

Assembled from Dallas’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Dallas requires a permit for general building work.

When a permit is not required

Chapter 52 of the Dallas City Code, Administrative Procedures for the Construction Codes, lists the work for which no permit is required in section 301.2. The list covers detached one-story accessory structures on single-family or duplex premises up to 200 square feet, platforms and decks meeting stated size and height limits, certain fences, small reroofing jobs, low retaining walls, and minor plumbing, mechanical and electrical work.

Listed because the city publishes a separate rule for each type — not because this project necessarily triggers one. Whether it does depends on your scope of work.
