Plano requires a permit for a deck.
Under Section R105.2 of the Residential Code of the City of Plano, adopted by Ordinance No. 2025-6-15, a deck escapes the permit requirement on four conditions at once: its area stays at 200 square feet or below, no point of it rises past 30 inches over the ground, it stands free of the dwelling or townhouse, and it is not the landing for the exit door Section R311.4 calls for. The Building Inspection Department handout When Is a Permit Required puts it more bluntly, treating any deck built or rebuilt higher than 30 inches above grade as permit work.
