Assembled from Alexandria’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Alexandria requires a permit for electrical work.

When a permit is not required

The Virginia Construction Code (13VAC5-63-80, Section 108.2) exempts items including installation of wiring and equipment that operates at less than 50 volts, except where located in a plenum, penetrating fire-rated or smoke-protected construction, or serving listed fire protection and life-safety systems, and replacement of general-use snap switches, dimmer and control switches, 125-volt 15- or 20-ampere receptacles, luminaires and ceiling fans in Groups R-3, R-4 and R-5 and in Group R-2 where serving a single dwelling unit.
