Do you need a permit?
Alexandria does not require a permit for a re-roof.
Under Section 108.2 of the Virginia Construction Code (13VAC5-63-80), ordinary repairs exempt from a building permit include replacing any amount of roof covering or siding on Group R-3, R-4 and R-5 buildings, provided the building is not in an area where the nominal design wind speed exceeds 100 miles per hour; replacing up to 100 square feet of roof covering on any building in any wind zone; and replacing up to 256 square feet of roof decking in Groups R-3, R-4 and R-5 unless the original decking was required to be fire-retardant-treated or to form a fire-rated wall termination. The building official may require a permit for replacement roofing, siding and windows in a historic district designated under Section 15.2-2306 of the Code of Virginia.
