Fairfax County requires a permit for electrical work.
The county's Does My Project Require a Permit? page exempts direct like-for-like replacement of electrical work with no change in location, and low-voltage wiring systems and equipment operating at 50 volts or less, provided they are not part of a fire protection, access control, or egress control system, are not located in a plenum, and do not penetrate fire-rated or smoke-protected construction; the Electrical (ELER) Residential page states that replacement of electrical equipment or fixtures requires a permit.
