Detached storage sheds that do not exceed 256 square feet in size and are no more than one story in height do not require a residential building permit in Fairfax County. Depending on the size and location of the project, additional approvals may be necessary: setbacks and other zoning requirements may apply, and site-related approval may be required before digging.
