Do you need a permit?
Birmingham requires a permit for electrical work.
Low voltage wiring limited to a Class II or lower power supply is exempt from having to be installed under an electrical permit by a licensed electrician, though a proper business license is required for that work. A low voltage permit is still required for telecommunication, sound, data, burglar alarm, power limited fire alarm, video and CATV, lawn sprinkler, fiber optic, Class II control and energy management wiring. Fire alarm systems included in the base cost of construction for new or remodeled buildings and shown on the approved building plans are exempt from the low voltage permit fee.
