Assembled from Birmingham’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Birmingham requires a permit for a water heater.

When a permit is not required

Repair or replacement of no more than 50 percent of a water service, not to exceed 20 feet, does not require a permit. Repair of a gas-fired furnace is exempt, but vent and gas piping require a gas permit.
