Shed permit checklist — Birmingham, Alabama

Assembled from Birmingham’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Birmingham requires a permit for a shed.

When a permit is not required

Accessory structures for one- and two-family dwellings less than 200 square feet are exempt from permit when approved by the Planning Division of the Department of Planning, Engineering and Permits. The department's permit questions page states a different threshold, that a storage building may be placed on a lot with an existing primary structure and located in the rear yard without a building permit only if it does not exceed 150 square feet.
