Do you need a permit?
Mesa requires a permit for electrical work.
An electrical permit is not required for: portable motors or other portable appliances energized by a cord or cable with an attachment plug end connected to an approved receptacle where that cord or cable is permitted by the Mesa Electrical Code; repair or replacement of fixed motors, transformers, or fixed approved appliances of the same type and rating in the same location; temporary decorative lighting; repair or replacement of current-carrying parts of any switch, contactor, or control device; installation of attachment plug receptacles, but not the outlets therefore; repair or replacement of any over-current device of the required capacity in the same location; repair or replacement of electrodes or transformers of the same size and capacity for signs or gas tube systems; taping joints; removal of electrical wiring; temporary wiring for experimental purposes in suitable experimental laboratories; wiring for temporary theater, motion picture, or television stage sets; electrical wiring, devices, appliances, apparatus, or equipment operating at less than 25 volts and not capable of supplying more than 50 watts of energy; low-energy power, control, and signal circuits of Class II and Class III; work by a public or private utility in the exercise of its function as a serving utility; installation of portable generators for temporary events subject to inspection by Fire Prevention; re-energizing an electric service by the serving electric supplier after a period of zero usage; outdoor lighting fixture installations by utility companies under duly approved contracts with the City of Mesa; and photovoltaic power systems that are listed and labeled by a nationally recognized testing agency, under 10,000 square feet, and installed by an Arizona Licensed Contractor. Application or notice is also not required for ordinary repairs to structures, replacement of lamps, or the connection of approved portable electrical equipment to approved permanently installed receptacles. Mesa City Code Section 4-1-4(D) limits the ordinary repairs allowance: it does not reach structural work, changes to a required means of egress, or the addition, alteration, replacement or relocation of piping, electric wiring or mechanical work affecting public health or general safety. Section 4-1-4(B)(2)(s) separately allows the Building Official to waive a permit for other work found to be of a minor nature.
