Fence permit checklist — Ontario, California

Assembled from Ontario’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Ontario requires a permit for a fence.

When a permit is not required

Ontario is far stricter than the state model on fences. Its Building Permit FAQ states that permits are required for fences over 3 feet high, and expressly names concrete block walls, chain link, wrought iron and wood fences as covered. Compare CBC/CRC 105.2's 7-foot exemption -- Ontario has cut that to 3 feet, so most ordinary residential fences need a permit here.

Listed because the city publishes a separate rule for each type — not because this project necessarily triggers one. Whether it does depends on your scope of work.
