Do you need a permit?
Chicago requires a permit for electrical work.
A permit is not required for minor electrical work such as replacing lamps or making cord-and-plug connections, or for low-voltage fixtures such as security cameras, telephone, computer, and speaker wiring, doorbells, and thermostats. In residential buildings up to four stories, installing, altering, or removing low voltage wiring or communication wiring requires no permit.
