Assembled from Chicago’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Chicago requires a permit for a fence.

When a permit is not required

A permit is not required to install a fence no more than 5 feet above the ground, measured on both sides, that conforms to the Chicago Zoning Ordinance, to remove such a fence, or to maintain an existing fence by painting it or replacing a limited number of damaged elements.
