Do you need a permit?
Chicago requires a permit for a water heater.
In residential buildings up to four stories and their accessory buildings, a permit is not required to repair or replace a hot water heater in kind. A permit is also not required to stop a leak, clear a stoppage, or remove and reinstall a water closet.
