Do you need a permit?
Indianapolis requires a permit for general building work.
A structural permit is not required for one- and two-family dwellings for like-for-like replacement of exterior prime doors and windows in openings of the same dimensions, replacement of an existing roof or exterior siding by a listed contractor meeting the notice and posting requirements of section 536-216, ordinary maintenance and repair that does not reduce performance or create additional health or safety risks, installation and replacement of cabinets, shelving, railings, wall and floor coverings and doors, storm windows, exterior repair of a masonry chimney above the roof line that does not reduce the flue opening, gutter replacement, window awnings projecting not more than 48 inches from a wall, thermal insulation, or additional non-load bearing walls that do not create sleeping rooms. An Improvement Location Permit may still be required depending on the scope, and separate plumbing, electrical and mechanical permits are required for exempt items unless otherwise exempted.
