Shed permit checklist — Indianapolis, Indiana

Assembled from Indianapolis’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Indianapolis requires a permit for a shed.

When a permit is not required

A shed that is 120 square feet or less, less than 15 feet in height, not on a permanent foundation and with no utility connection does not require a permit. Between 121 and 200 square feet, a Structural Permit and a Drainage Permit are required. Over 200 square feet, a Structural Permit, an Improvement Location Permit and a Drainage Permit are required. A Flood Permit is required for all construction projects on a parcel in a flood zone.
