Electrical work permit checklist — Indianapolis, Indiana

Assembled from Indianapolis’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Indianapolis requires a permit for electrical work.

When a permit is not required

A permit is not required for the installation of a single-phase electric circuit not exceeding 60 amperes at a nominal 120/240 volts that involves the installation, modernization, replacement, service or repair of a heating system, space heating equipment, cooling system, space cooling equipment, a water heater or a food waste disposer for which a building permit has been issued. Installation of household appliances such as window air conditioners, refrigerators, ranges, microwave ovens, clothes washers, clothes dryers, dishwashers, food waste disposers and trash compactors is exempt when the installation does not include the installation of an electrical circuit. Connection, provision or use of temporary electrical power for on-site construction is also exempt.
