Do you need a permit?
Indianapolis requires a permit for a water heater.
A permit is not required to replace a water heater with one that is identical as to venting arrangement and type of fuel or energy input. Installation of a single-phase electric circuit not exceeding 60 amperes at a nominal 120/240 volts for the installation, modernization, replacement, service or repair of a water heater for which a building permit has been issued is also exempt.
