Deck permit checklist — Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Assembled from Baton Rouge’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Baton Rouge requires a permit for a deck.

When a permit is not required

Section 8:501 of the Code of Ordinances lists the work exempt from a building permit and does not include decks among the exempted items. The Permit & Inspection Division information sheet Understanding Permit Requirements lists decks less than 200 square feet and less than 30 inches off of the ground as exempt from permitting if they are located in a buildable area of the lot.
