Do you need a permit?
Fargo requires a permit for general building work.
Fargo amends IRC Section R105.2 locally. Four residential items come off the permit list: a detached single-story accessory building of 120 square feet or less, storm shelters excluded; fencing that tops out at 8.5 feet; a pool holding water shallower than 24 inches; and a freestanding deck of 120 square feet or less that nowhere rises past 7 inches off the ground, stands clear of the house, and is not the landing for the code-required exit door. Everything else starts with a permit - the Guide for Single Family Residential Construction directs owners to have one before work is started.
