Shed permit checklist — Newark, New Jersey

Assembled from Newark’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Newark does not require a permit for a shed.

When a permit is not required

N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.14 does not require a construction permit for building work on garden-type utility sheds and similar structures that are 200 square feet or less in area, 10 feet or less in height, accessory to a building in use group R-2, R-3, R-4 or R-5, and without a water, gas, oil or sewer connection. A construction permit for electrical work is still required where electrical work is involved.
