Defined in the standard specifications of 11 state transportation agencies. Each definition below is the agency’s own text, with the section it comes from — they do not all say the same thing, and on a contract the difference is the point.
Definitions are quoted from state-authored public specification books. This page carries no I-Code-derived terms.
General term applied to all Contract terms, conditions, directions, provisions, and requirements. STANDARD MODIFICATIO N. Addition or revision that amends or supersedes the Standard Specification, and is approved by the Department for general application and repetitive use.

Section 101 — DEFINITION OF TERMS →A general term applied to all directions, provisions and requirements pertaining to performance of the work. (a) Standard Specifications: The Department’s printed book (including errata) titled Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction. The book is divided into three parts namely: 1. General Provisions (Division 100) 2. Construction Details (Divisions 200 thru 600) 3. Material Details (Division 700) 101.02 101-10 (b) Supplemental Specifications: Additions and revisions to the Standard Specifications that are adopted subsequent to the issuance of the printed book. The outline for “Work” items in the Construction Details contains the following: 1. Description 2. Materials 3. Construction Requirements 4. Method of Measurement 5. Basis of Payment
Section 101 — DEFINITIONS AND TERMS →The general term comprising all the written documents, provisions, and requirements to which may be added or adopted Supplemental Specifications, Developmental Specifications, or Special Provisions, all of which are necessary for the proper performance of the contract documents. Specified Starting Date. A calendar day shown on the proposal on which date commencement of work is expected. Speed Limit. Refers to the legally established speed limit before construction and not the advisory speed during construction. Standard Road Plans. A manual of detailed drawings showing standardized design features, construction methods, and approved materials for repetitive use on Interstate, Primary, and Secondary road construction. Standard Specifications. The requirements contained herein applying to all contracts, and pertaining to the method and manner of performing the work, or to the quantity and quality of the materials to be furnished under the contract. State. The State of Iowa acting through its authorized representative. Station. One hundred linear feet. Street.
Section 1101 — Definitions →Special Notes. Specifications developed for a specific item of work which may be appropriate only for a particular project but may become standard if regularly used as future projects using the item develop. Special Provisions. Additions and revisions to the Standard and Supplemental Specifications covering conditions peculiar to an individual pro ject.

Short, strong, driven members removed to make holes for inserting piles. State A. The State of Michigan or the Michigan Department of Transportation Department, or both, when the State is the awarding authority; B. The County when a C ounty is the awarding authority; or C. The Municipality when a C ity or V illage is the awarding authority. Station. When used as a definition or term of measurement, a station is 100 feet.
