452Sealing and Resealing Concrete Pavement Joints

SECTION 452: SEALING AND RESEALING CONCRETE PAVEMENT JOINTS

452.1 Description

This Work consists of cleaning, p riming, and sealing concrete p avement joints. This Work also consists of removi ng joint sealant, sawing, cleaning, priming, and resealing joints. The Contractor shall seal only joints between adjacent portland cement concrete surfaces. The Contractor shall seal joints between PCCP and as phalt pavement in accordance with Section 411, “Hot-Poured Crack Sealant,” unless otherwise shown on the Plans.

452.2 Materials

452.2.1 Sealant

Joint sealant Material will either be a Type NS or SL single co mponent silicone formulation meeting the requirements of ASTM D 5893 or a single component low modulus polyurethane formulation meeting the requirements of ASTM C 920 and Table 452.2.2:1, “Polyurethane Sealant Physical Requirements.” The Contractor shall provide a qualified manufacturer’s represe ntative on the Project for at least the first Day of sealant application. The Contractor shall prepare and seal the joints in accordance with proper procedures approved by the manufacturer’ s representative. The Contractor shall obtain the manufacturer’s written verifica tion of primer, backer, and sealant compatibility.

452.2.2 Certification

For each lot of sealant applied to concrete pavement joints, th e Contractor shall provide certified test results in accordance with ASTM D 5893 or ASTM C 920 and Table 452.2.2:1, “Polyurethane Sealant Physical Requirements,” except as otherwi se provided in the Contract. The Contractor shall provide sealant test results and verificat ion that the product is currently within the manufacturer’s recommended shelf life to t he Project Manager at least ten

10.Days before sealant insta llation. Certification will show areas of primer use. 452.2.3 Bondbreaker

The bondbreaker is a round closed cell, nonabsorbent Material c ompatible with the sealant Material, that is at least 1/8 inch larger in diameter than the width of the joint being sealed. If primer is required, the Contractor shall ensure tha t no adverse reaction occurs between the bondbreaker and sealant or primer.

452.3 Construction Requirements

452.3.1 General

The Contractor shall repair damage to the pavement surface, at no additional cost to the Department. The Contractor shall perform these repairs to the concrete surfaces before beginning sealing operations, as directed by the Project Manage r. The Contractor shall dispose of old sealant Materials in accord ance with Section 107, “Legal Relations, Environmental Requirements, and Responsibilit y to Public .”

452.3.2 Temperature and Weather Limitations

The Contractor shall perform joint sealing or resealing only un der the following conditions: 1. The air and pavement temperat ures are 40 °F or higher; 2. The pavement temperature is above the dew point; 3. The pavement and joint faces are dry and frost free; and 4. Weather conditions are dry.

452.3.3 Resealing Operations

The Contractor shall saw the transverse and longitudinal joints to the specified width, depth, and configuration.

452.3.4 Joint Preparation

The Contractor shall use a router to follow the path of random cracks and widen the top of the crack to the required section. The Contractor shall sandblast joints and clean with compressed air. The Contractor shall provide a one (1) inch wide border of clea n, dry, newly exposed concrete before applying the bondbreaker and sealant at the joi nt and adjacent pavement. The Contractor shall use cleaning wands that provide compressed air with at least 100 psi of pressure at the outlet nozzle. The Contractor shall ensure that the compressed air is free of oil and moisture.

452.3.5 Sealant Application

Section 452: Sealing and Resealing Concrete Pavement Joints Page 258 The Contractor shall apply the sealant according to the manufac turer’s recommendations, unless otherwise specified and approved by the Project Manager. The Contractor shall obtain Project Manager approval of the manufac turer’s sealant application instructions before beginning Work. The Contractor shall place the bondbreaker to maintain the spec ified depth of the sealant Material. The Contractor shall provide a finished joint seal surface that is concave and 1/4 inch ± 1/8 inch below the surface of the concrete pavement. The Project Manager will cease oper ations if the Contractor sea ls joints inconsistently. The Contractor shall correct inc onsistencies in joint sealing o perations and remove and replace non-conforming sealan t at no additional cost to the Dep artment.

452.4 Method of Measurement

Sealing concrete pavement joint s and resealing concrete paveme nt joints will be measured by the linear foot.

452.5 Basis of Payment

452.5.1 Work Included in Payment

The Department will consider as included in the payment for th e pay item(s) listed in this section and will not measure or pay separately for the followin g Work: 1. Cleaning, priming, and seali ng concrete pavement joints; 2. Removing joint sealant, sawi ng, cleaning, priming, and resea ling joints; and 3. Provide sealant Material.
