Assembled from Surprise’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Surprise requires a permit for electrical work.

When a permit is not required

The city's Local Amendments to the 2024 International Residential Code (effective January 1, 2026) add electrical exemptions that include: installation or replacement of a ceiling fan or fan/light on an electrical box approved for fan support that was installed with a valid permit; replacement of receptacles or light fixtures in a dwelling unit that does not change the wiring, where the electrical box is rated for the weight of the fixture; installation or replacement of solar attic fans; installation or replacement of an electric circuit to a landscape timer; and special cases allowed by the Building Official for work of a similar nature and complexity.
