Shed permit checklist — Surprise, Arizona
Assembled from Surprise’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.
Do you need a permit?
Surprise requires a permit for a shed.
Under the city's Local Amendments to the 2024 International Residential Code (effective January 1, 2026), one-story detached accessory structures other than storm shelters do not require a building permit when the floor area does not exceed 200 square feet. Section 106-10.3 of the Land Development Ordinance provides that an accessory structure exempt from the building permit requirement must still comply with any other provisions, code, or regulation adopted by the city.
