Cook County requires a permit for a shed.
Cook County's Department of Building and Zoning permits only unincorporated Cook County and the Forest Preserves of Cook County - its own page states the department 'oversees all building and zoning matters in the unincorporated areas of Cook County and all of the Forest Preserves of Cook County' and directs anyone inside a municipality to their local building and zoning authority. Detached sheds and garages are expressly permitted work, with their own requirement sheet, and they get a dedicated line on the fee schedule rather than being priced as a remodel. Zoning review of setbacks and accessory-structure limits applies in addition to the building review.
