Do you need a permit?
Wichita requires a permit for general building work.
Section 2.4.030 of the residential code article in the Wichita-Sedgwick County Unified Building and Trade Code sets out the work that needs no building permit. Within Wichita that covers: new floor covering, paint, wallpaper, tile, carpet, cabinetry, countertops, paneling and comparable finish work; window, door and skylight swaps at the same size or smaller where no structural member is removed, cut, altered or replaced; patching or replacing interior gypsum wallboard on walls and ceilings that carry no fire rating, capped at 100 square feet across any 12-month span and only where framing, electrical, mechanical and plumbing stay untouched; a window awning carried on an exterior wall that reaches out 54 inches or less and needs no extra support; above-ground pool kits shallower than 24 inches with walls fully above grade and a capacity of 5,000 gallons or under; backyard play structures at a one- or two-family home; playhouses and tree houses; walkways and driveways sitting 30 inches or less over the grade beside them and not built above a basement or a story below; and emergency board-up or temporary bracing following a fire, storm, vehicle strike or similar disaster, as long as MABCD hears about it by the next business day.
