Do you need a permit?
Wichita requires a permit for a retaining wall.
Section 2.4.030 of the residential code article in the Wichita-Sedgwick County Unified Building and Trade Code lets a retaining wall go without a permit up to 4 feet, gauged from the footing base up to the wall's highest point, provided nothing adds load behind it. The building code article of the same code, covering buildings other than one- and two-family dwellings, uses a different number: 30 inches, measured up from the low point of the grade alongside. The adopted code publishes both figures.
