Shed permit checklist — Wichita, Kansas

Assembled from Wichita’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Wichita requires a permit for a shed.

When a permit is not required

In the Wichita jurisdiction, Section 2.4.030 of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Unified Building and Trade Code exempts one-story detached accessory structures in Group S or Group U from a building permit when the floor area is 200 square feet or less and a location permit is obtained from MABCD before the structure is installed. The building code article of the same code states the same 200 square foot limit and adds the condition that the structure have no utilities. Non-fixed movable storage cabinets with doors and a footprint of 25 square feet or less require no location permit. All detached accessory structures larger than 25 square feet and up to 400 square feet must be tied down in accordance with the City of Wichita Non Vehicular Storage Structure Anchoring Standards or attached to a permanent concrete foundation meeting Section R403.1.6.
