503PROTECTIVE COATING FOR CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENT

503.1DESCRIPTION—This work is the application of protective coating to concrete pavements and shoulders.

503.2MATERIAL—

silane or siloxane material, with no petroleum distillates meeting the following properties:

protective sealer, not greater than 20% of the final average percent water absorbed by the uncoated reference concrete, according to ASTM C642.

the protective sealer, not less than 75% of its final average percent water absorption , according to ASTM D6490.

with the protective sealer, not greater than 15% of the final average absorbed chlorideion content of the uncoated reference concrete, according to AASHTO T 259.

after 6 months of exposure to atmospheric conditions.

Certify as specified in Section 106.03(b)3 and submit a copy of the manufacturer's application recommendations.

503.3CONSTRUCTION—

protective coating penetration, adhesion, or drying. Use a power broom on surfaces cured with curing compound. Allow a minimum of 28 days to elapse before applying protective coating. Apply the protective coating before subjecting the concrete surface to deicing chemicals.

manufacturer's shelf life. Ensure complete coverage of treated concrete surfaces. Apply in weather suitable for drying. Do not apply if inclement weather is anticipated within 12 hours of application. Before application, obtain permission to apply protective coating when either the air or surface temperature is below 40F. In the presence of the Representative, conduct a test section on a minimum of 100 square feet to determine the proper application rate to ensure complete surface coverage. Apply protective coating at the determined application rate to the remainder of the surface. Close surface to traffic for a period of at least 6 hours or until tackiness has disappeared and no pickup results from use.

the presence of flammable and volatile mineral spirits blended into the protective coating. Before using the treated pavement surface, satisfactorily correct slippery pavement conditions, other hazards, or inconvenience to traffic, resulting from the protective coating application as directed.
