Maricopa County requires a permit for a deck.
Maricopa County's amended Section 105.2 exemption list contains no entry for decks, porches, patio covers or ramadas, so unlike most IRC jurisdictions there is no published 200 sq ft / 30-inch-height deck exemption here — a deck or patio cover is treated as ordinary construction and needs a permit. The fee schedule confirms this by assigning valuations to patio structures: wood-frame or masonry patio covers are valued as open carports, and metal patio covers and covered pipe-rail horse corrals are valued at 50 percent of that. The closest analogue on the exempt list is home playground equipment, which needs no permit. Decks attached to a home must also satisfy zoning setbacks and accessory-structure placement rules in Directive DD-3012-01.
