Maricopa County requires a permit for a fence.
Maricopa County is unusually strict here. The county's own FAQ states that 'All fencing over one (1) foot in height requires a permit from the Planning and Development Department' — a one-foot trigger, far lower than the 6-foot or 7-foot thresholds common elsewhere in the West. There is effectively no practical residential fence exemption. Pool barrier fencing carries additional requirements under Directive DD-5012-01 (Fence, Wall, and Pool Barriers Requirements) and Arizona's state pool-barrier statute. Roadway gates within a private road easement are exempt from permit, but gates in platted subdivision streets or public rights-of-way are not.
