Do you need a permit?
Port St. Lucie requires a permit for general building work.
Florida Statutes Section 553.79(1)(g), created by Chapter 2026-63, Laws of Florida (CS/CS/HB 803, 2026 Regular Session), has required since July 1, 2026 that every Florida local government issuing permits waive the building permit for work valued under $7,500 performed on a single-family dwelling by the owner or the owner's contractor. Port St. Lucie is bound by that floor; no city may decline it. It does not operate automatically. The statute conditions the exemption on the owner or contractor delivering a written request to the local enforcement agency along with the contract or other documentation identifying the nature of the work and what it is worth. Several categories fall outside it whatever the value: any property lying wholly or partly in a flood hazard area as the Florida Building Code defines that term, and all electrical, plumbing, structural, mechanical and gas work. A project may not be broken into more than one project to sidestep the paragraph, and the statute relieves the local government of any legal duty to the owner, contractor or their successors for exempted work. Port St. Lucie has not published an exemption request form or a written procedure describing how the Building Department handles these requests, so an owner should contact the department directly for filing instructions.
